College of Agriculture & Natural Resources
Animal & Avian Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, where you'll find a small school feel with big opportunities!

The Department of Animal and Avian Sciences provides a challenging program for academically talented students interested in the application of biology and technology to the care, management and study of domestic and aquatic animals. A number of our animal sciences graduates enter veterinary school, while others go on to graduate school in a variety of programs. Our graduates also pursue a broad range of careers, such as research technicians, educators, sales or marketing representatives, and animal producers.

Our BS Degree program in Animal Sciences allows students to choose from three different options. Under each of these tracks, students have opportunities to tailor the program to their interests, by selecting Management and Advanced Elective courses that reflects the emphasis area on which they wish to focus. Emphasis areas students may choose to focus on include  equine, dairy, biotechnology, and many others!

A complete list of course requirements for any of these options, along with sample 4-year plans, is available on the Program Requirements page.

On-Campus Farm

Our strategic location provides exciting opportunities for students to study and experience today's modern agriculture. Nine miles from the nation's capital, the University of Maryland at College Park is within easy reach of the country's best research facilities. The ANSC Department is also very unique in being a large suburban/urban institution with our teaching farm right on campus! The Campus Farm is a tremendous asset, and allows students to get hands-on experience with a variety of livestock without ever leaving campus. Our program has a small school feel with all the advantages of a large University, and is truly the best of both worlds!
