“Judy” Brocksmith ’64, who established the Judith E. Brocksmith Veterinary Scholarship that has assisted pre-vet students since 2011, passed away on September 1, 2024. Her endowment will continue aiding pre-vet student recipients for many years to come.
Heading into this academic year, the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences awarded several departmental scholarships that assist with funding students’ academics, internships, and travel to meetings or presentations. Whether an undergraduate or graduate student, ANSC at the departmental level and AGNR at the college level, have award possibilities to aid your experience at UMD. Many, but not all, of the ANSC scholarships are for undergraduates, while graduate students have some scholarships as well as assistantship opportunities with stipends. American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS): Eli Greene, Hope Weiss, and Oluwajomiloju Ajayi (used to help fund her poultry internship in Nigeria)

ANSC Department Scholarships:

American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) - In order to promote networking with academic and industry scientists, ANSC graduate students are encouraged to apply for the ARPAS (American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists) supported travel award.

England Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to selected students within the ANSC major who clearly demonstrate an interest in obtaining a career in the dairy industry.

Kinghorne Scholarship - Awarded to undergraduate students with demonstrated interests in poultry production or avian business. Recipients of the Kinghorne Scholarship are required to take the two departmental poultry courses and complete an internship within the poultry industry.

Rummel Scholarship - Awarded to one student with a demonstrated interest in conducting research in Avian Ethology. The recipient of the Rummel Scholarship will complete a research project directed by a faculty member within the ANSC Department. Students interested in applying for this scholarship should also include a proposal for the research project.

Judith E. Brocksmith Veterinary Scholarship - Awarded to one student enrolled in the pre-veterinary option within the ANSC major. This scholarship is awarded based on merit.

Tom Hartsock Animal Management Scholarship (awarded every other year on odd years) - Awarded to one student enrolled in the care and management option within the ANSC major. Student must have completed 27 credits and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
ANSC Department Graduate Assistantships:
ANSC graduate students have opportunities to participate in both research and teaching; for those who wish to invest in these duties while they pursue their education, we offer a limited number of graduate assistantships each year. Assistantships provide students with a stipend, tuition remission for up to 10 credit hours per semester, and health insurance benefits. Learn More.
How to Apply for ANSC or AGNR Scholarships:
To apply, keep an eye out for application window announcements, and visit the Scholarships section that applies to you (Undergraduate or Graduate). AGNR scholarships are administered at the college level and should also be reviewed.
When the time comes for next year’s scholarship applications, which is usually in the spring, review your eligibility and apply – in recent years, some scholarships have not been awarded simply because no eligible applicant applied!
