The Maryland Beef Industry is home to over 2400 beef cow-calf farms and 1800 "Other" operations (this number includes backgrounding, stocker-type and feedlots) with nearly 100,000 head of cattle (2012 US Ag Census). It is a nearly $1 billion business with approximately 4300 individuals employed in this sector of the agriculture economy (The Impact of Agriculture of the Maryland Economy).
Extension is a nationwide educational network that brings the research and knowledge of land-grant institutions to people in their homes, workplaces, and communities. University of Maryland Extension is a statewide, non-formal education system within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland College Park Campus.
The University of Maryland Beef Extension Team is available to help the state’s beef industry through seminars, resources, and hands-on workshops. UME offices are located in every county as well as in Baltimore City. State specialists are located in Regional offices or at one of the university’s campuses, as well as the Wye Research and Education Center. Please take some time to look at the information and opportunities we have available to help members of our vast beef community.
