ARPAS Mini-symposium:

The Washington, DC chapter of ARPAS (American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists) held its first annual mini-symposium since 2019 on April 27, via Zoom and some members of the department were among the speakers. The symposium was entitled "Recent Food Safety and Animal Health Research at USDA-ARS and the University of Maryland." Dr. Debabrata Biswas gave a talk on "Non-pathogenic and Auto-lytic Salmonella Vaccine in Reducing Salmonella in Poultry Gut." Dr. Eduardo Rico addressed "Reevaluating the role of ketones in dairy cow nutrition and health: A research perspective" and Arpita Aditya, graduate student in Dr. Biswas' lab, spoke on "Antagonistic mechanism of metabolites from Lactobacillus casei against Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli."

Graduate Student Summer Research Fellowship:

Congratulations to Caroline Halmi and Anmol Kandel for receiving a Graduate Student Summer Research Fellowship for Summer 2022. Both ANSC graduate students were nominated by the department and prepared a proposal of their research plans for the summer and how it progresses them towards their degrees.

American Association for Anatomy PostDoc Fellowship:

Dr. Carrie Leonard, a postdoc in the Taneyhill lab, won a postdoctoral fellowship from the American Association for Anatomy (AAA). The AAA promotes cutting-edge research, supports a diverse and inclusive membership, and advocates on behalf of biomedical science research.

AGNR Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards:

This year’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Faculty and Staff Awards were held on May 11, 2022, under a tent in the Animal and Avian Sciences Courtyard. ANSC faculty members Dr. Iqbal Hamza and Dr. Byung-Eun Kim were awarded two of the Dean’s Grantsmanship Awards. Additionally, ANSC staff members Jessica Karunaratne and Racheal Slattery were both recognized for five years of service to AGNR.
