Below are the dates for the 2017 Maryland 4-H dairy cattle judging sessions and directions. Unless otherwise stated, all practice sessions will begin at 10:00am. If you ahve any additional questions or pratices that should be listed, please contact Jeff Semler at 301-791-1304 or

Spring Valley Farm – 1600 Humbert Schoolhouse Rd, Westminster - From Westminster: continue north on Rt 97 (~10 miles); turn right on Humbert Schoolhouse Rd; travel to first farm on the left. From Taneytown: Travel north on Rt 194 to Stone Rd; turn right on Stone Rd; take first left on Black’s School House Rd. Turn right on Rt 97, then left on Humbert Schoolhouse Rd.  Travel to first farm on the left.

Crown Stone Farm – 14748 Fairview Rd, Clear Spring - From Hagerstown, continue North on I-70 to exit 24 (Rt 63, Williamsport/Huyett exit). Turn right on Rt 63 North, continue for 4 miles; turn left on Rt 494 and continue for 5 miles.  Turn right at farm sign and follow lane through the pasture to the barns.

Reasons Rubric:

Maryland State Contest officials will be instructed to score reasons based upon the following rubric and guidelines. Please refer to the Holstein Foundation’s “Dairy Judging Workbook” pages 20-21 for additional information on how reasons will be assessed.If reason notes are read or referred to frequently when presented, an automatic 10 point deduction will be assessed.

Content: 35 points

  • Accuracy
  • Prioritization
  • Terminology

Delivery: 15 points

  • Appearance
  • Speed
  • Diction
  • Emphasis

Dress Code Guidelines:

Business casual/professional dress is expected for the Maryland State Contest. Business casual/professional dress includes: khaki pants, slacks, and skirts, polo shirts, blouses, long-sleeved shirts or suits.It is preferred that jeans, tennis shoes, tight or short skits, T-shirts, or sweatshirts NOT be worn during the Maryland State Contest.
