ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

2006 marked the University of Maryland's 150th anniversary. Happy Birthday, Maryland!

Today, as the flagship of the state's 13-campus university system, University of Maryland, College Park counts 2,874 faculty members who teach 25,000 undergraduate students and nearly 10,000 graduate students. There are more than 100 majors to choose from. According to the 2005 U.S. News & World Report, UMCP was 18th in the ranking of national public universities and ranks 20th in the nation in a survey of Best Graduate Schools. With over 80 graduate programs and a number of independent research institutes, it is one of the largest campuses in the United States.

LOCATION

The campus is located in College Park, Maryland, a suburb of Washington DC and is in the heart of the Baltimore-Washington research corridor and just 15 minutes from downtown Washington DC. The area has many internationally recognized museums, monuments, libraries, theaters, and performing arts organizations. The campus lies in close proximity to a number of major research institutions including the National Institues of Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, United States Department of Agriculture, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Library of Congress, National Endowment for Humanities, National Science Foundation, Smithsonian, and the National Zoo.

The Washington region encompasses large areas devoted to wildlife refuges and scenic parks including the waterways of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, from the Shenandoah and Appalachian Mountains to the Cheseapeake Bay and Assateague seashores.
